Get involved Online Event Series 2022: Shadowing Scheme

23 Jun - Virtual, online

Overview

Overview

We are pleased to announce that our Get involved series is back! Following the successful Shadowing Scheme event in 2021, please join us for another opportunity to learn from other members about how to get more involved in Microbiology Society activities.

Get involved Online Event: Shadowing Scheme will take place virtually on 23 June 2022, 10:00–11:00 BST (UK time).

The Microbiology Society Council and Committees Shadowing Scheme gives members an exclusive opportunity to gain insight into the inner working of the Society. By experiencing at first hand the activities and decision-making processes of key governing groups of the organisation, members can add to their CV, gain a wealth of knowledge and behind-the-scenes information, and network with other microbiologists.

We would like to welcome anyone who is interested in becoming more involved in the Society’s activities, now or in the future, to join us to hear from Council and Committee members who have first-hand experience of taking part taken part in the Shadowing Scheme. It will be a unique opportunity to find out what it is like to take part in the scheme, ask questions, and decide if it could be your next challenge.

We particularly welcome people from historically marginalised groups to participate in the Shadowing Scheme, as it is an good way to gain insight into the inner working of the Society and determine if you would be willing to commit to serve on Council or Committees. Find out more about representation at the Society and our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

The following members will be speaking on the day:

  • Winnie Lee, ECM Forum Executive Committee Sustainability Committee Representative and previous Shadowing Scheme candidate.
  • Mel Lacey, Impact and Influence Committee and previous Shadowing Scheme host and candidate.
  • Karen Campos-Leon, Members’ Panel and Society Champion, previous Shadowing Scheme candidate.

The Get involved series focus on exploring benefits available exclusively for members to get more involved with Society activities, by hearing from other members about what their experience has been and how this has aided their professional development. If you want to know more about any of our activities please get in touch and we can incorporate your request in our process.

Mel Lacey

I’m a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology at Sheffield Hallam University. I joined the Shadowing Scheme in February 2021 to gain a better understanding of how the Society worked, what being involved would look like and if my contribution would be useful. Shadowing was a great experience so I applied to be an Impact and Influence Committee Member and have been member since January 2022.

My name is Karen Campos-León and I hold a BSc. in Biology and an MSc. in Genetics and Molecular Biology, both of which were awarded in Mexico City, Mexico. Later on, I moved to the United Kingdom to pursue a career in science and I obtained a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Bristol, UK in 2013. I have nearly six years of experience as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. During this time, I worked at the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham, UK (5 years), as well as at the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Leeds, UK (6 months). At the moment I am on a career break due to family reasons.
