The event will start at 15:15 and includes a networking session that will allow you to talk in more depth with local like-minded individuals as well as the President and members of the Microbiology Society Team. During the session, you will be able to learn how you can get more involved with Society activities.

Professor Judith Armitage FRS, is from the University of Oxford and is currently President of the Microbiology Society. Her Presidency runs for three years and began on 1 January 2019. Judy joined the Society as a PhD student in the early 1970s. She is a bacterial physiologist using interdisciplinary approaches to study bacterial behavior. She was an editor of the Journal of Bacteriology for 10 years and is currently one of the two Editors in Chief of Current Opinions in Microbiology. She is a member of EMBO, a Fellow of the American Society of Microbiology and the Royal Society of Biology. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2013.
 

Professor Mat Upton

Mat Upton is Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Plymouth. His research focus is in antimicrobial resistance with activities in antimicrobial drug discovery, diagnostics and infection control. He has a growing interest in the microbiology of deep-sea environments, which are being explored as a source of potentially novel bioactive molecules. Mat is Chief Scientific Officer at Amprologix, a company he span out last year to commercialise lead antibiotic candidate epidermicin. He is also co-founder of Spectromics, which was established to develop a rapid antibiotic susceptibility test. Mat joined the Society as a PhD student and has served as Editor for the Journal of Medical Microbiology. He is a member of the Society for Applied Microbiology, the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and the American Society for Microbiology and is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society for Biology.

Dr Tina Joshi

Dr Tina Joshi is a Lecturer in Molecular Microbiology at the University of Plymouth. Tina leads the Microbial Diagnostics and Infection Control Research Group and is Employability Co-ordinator for School of Biomedical Sciences. She is on the scientific committee for Antibiotic Research UK, Microbiology Society Policy Committee and is a Microbiology Society Champion. Tina specialises in infection control of bacteria (Clostridium difficile spores) and development of molecular diagnostics for antibiotic resistant organisms. 

Tina was awarded the Hind Rattan ‘Jewel of India’ Award from the Indian Government (Non-Resident Indian Welfare Society of India) in 2018 for diasporal achievements in academia within the country of her birth - the UK. She was also a finalist in the “Inspirational Women in STEM” category at the 2019 regional Devon and Cornwall Venus Awards.
