Abstract

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Project in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow addresses issues of inclusivity that present widespread challenges in higher education, and which have not been widely addressed in the teaching of microbiology. To address the inequalities in microbiology education and the student experience, interventions to make the curriculum more inclusive are required. This project developed two strategies to embed novel EDI resources into Life Sciences undergraduate courses, making the curriculum more inclusive and empowering for students. These resources were developed and are suitable for use in a wide variety of higher education settings and are freely available online. The two approaches that will be discussed are: Embedding EDI in the Curriculum, creating learning and teaching material to embed the values of EDI into undergraduate Life Science degree courses, including Microbiology programmes, and raising awareness about key EDI issues in the academic environment, equipping students with the tools to break down barriers they may observe or encounter throughout their career. Decolonising the Curriculum, working with students to create material that raises awareness and addresses the need of Decolonising the Curriculum efforts, acknowledging biases in the scientific community and re-contextualising learning to increase viewpoints from diverse groups, developing an inclusive learning environment.
