Abstract

Jane Usher is Senior Lecturer in Medical Mycology at the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) within the University of Exeter. Her research centres on antifungal drug resistance, with a principal focus on Candida glabrata and the genetic mechanisms that underlie resistance, collateral sensitivity and adaptation in human fungal pathogens. She obtained a BSc in Biology and Statistics at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, then completed an MSc in Molecular Medicine and a PhD in Yeast Genomics at Trinity College Dublin. She then carried out postdoctoral research at the Institute of Systems Biology, University of Ottawa, before joining the University of Exeter and the MRC CMM. In recognition of her independent research leadership, she was awarded a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) Discovery Fellowship at Exeter.  Dr Usher’s laboratory uses a multifaceted approach  integrating genomics, experimental evolution, molecular genetics and bioinformatics to study how fungal pathogens adapt to stress, evade immune responses (for example macrophage‐mediated killing), and develop drug resistance. Her group’s work on Candida glabrata has advanced our understanding of how combinatorial stress and antifungal exposure drive tolerance and resistance, generating opportunities to develop treatment strategies (such as drug combination or cycling therapies) to overcome resistance.
