Abstract

This joint presentation will provide an overview of the diverse science outreach initiatives at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Dr Orla Sherlock, the outreach coordinator for the School of Health and Science, will discuss the development and impact of a dynamic pilot Microbiology outreach lab, the “Germ Lab.” This lab is specifically designed to engage local secondary school students and spark their curiosity about topical Microbiology issues, including the Microbiome and, more recently, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Two new activities and their potential for scaling up will be highlighted: “DkIT’s Science in a Box,” a co-created microbiology activity delivered by school teachers in classrooms, and the “Totally Yours” cosmetics STEM challenge. The latter initiative allows transition year students to work in teams on three hands-on challenges, competing for STEM roles in a fictional expanding cosmetics company. Dr Bridget Kelly will talk about some of the of cross disciplinary outreach projects that she has been and currently is involved with. This will range from: a project which engages local artists to raise awareness of microbiology to secondary school students; the outreach outputs of cross disciplinary student internships; a community science and art outreach project as well as a TY entrepreneurship programme that has been running for several years at the institute.
