Biography

Queer and trans microbiologists often work in isolation, without mentors who share their lived experience, and with limited institutional support. The Pride in Microbiology (PiM) Network was created to change that, turning visibility into enduring structures of care, mentorship, and opportunity for 2LGBTQ+ microbiologists. Today, PiM sustains a global, identity-affirming network reaching over 260 people, 171 active community members, and registering over 70 participants in PiM Connections, a mentorship and research-interest matching platform, spanning 17 countries across five continents. PiM’s programming, regular Coffee Breaks, Pride-aligned public events, and targeted mentoring, offers a safe haven (including for members in places where being openly LGBTQIA+ is risky) and a replicable model for inclusion that blends professional development with community care. PiM has moved inclusion from aspiration to practice across major societies (Microbiology Society, American Society of Microbiology, Canadian Society of Microbiologists, International Society for Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, Applied Microbiology International), delivering over 20 invited talks, organizing more than 10 community events, and contributing seven publications and commentaries that shape policy and culture, from inclusive meeting design to equity in hiring. This Prize Lecture will share a concrete playbook: data-driven advocacy, meeting design checklists, mentorship pipelines, and governance models that any department, lab, or society can adopt. The goal is simple and urgent: build cultures where 2SLGBTQI+ microbiologists are safe, supported, and able to thrive, so that better science follows.
