Abstract

The Trailfinder-CF Innovation Hub collaborated with Made by Mortals, creators of the award-winning Armchair Adventures podcast, to co-create three engaging educational podcast episodes for children aged 6-10. Through a series of workshops, children and young people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) worked alongside scientists, artists and musicians to develop episodes that combine lived experience, science and storytelling. Young people with CF played a central role in shaping the storyline, sharing experiences and learning about microbiology and phage therapy from Trailfinder-CF researchers. In the adventure, resident character Connie learns about CF, explores how bacteria can become difficult to treat, and discovers bacteriophages as an alternative approach to fighting infection. The story culminates in a phage-hunting adventure designed to make the scientific concepts accessible to children. The co-creation process benefited all participants. Children and young people gained knowledge, confidence and an opportunity to share their experiences, while researchers gained valuable insight into the realities of living with CF. The project also benefitted a group of over 65’s in the Made by Mortals Hearts and Minds Group who attended sessions on CF and phage therapy helping to develop content for the episodes. The podcast episodes provide a lasting legacy of freely accessible educational content. By combining scientific learning with creativity and lived experience, the podcast has provided a fun and engaging way to educate children about cystic fibrosis and microbiology. It also highlights research of the Trailfinder-CF innovation hub investigating new and improved treatments for respiratory bacterial infections.
