Biography

Beky is a postdoctoral research associate working in the Cardiff University School of Biosciences. Her research interests include the application of microbiota analysis to understand lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis, bacterial contamination in industry and the isolation and characterisation of bacteriophages infecting Burkholderia bacteria. Beky’s long-term goal is to establish a research career focussing on bacteriophage biology and biocontrol. Beky is keen to contribute to the wider academic environment by being involved in teaching, training and science community activities. She is a member of Cardiff University staff committees, GW4 and Microbiology Society Building Communities committees and early career research networks, which advocate collaboration and positive research culture. Beky is also interested in public engagement, but until recently had only experienced this by volunteering in events led by other researchers at Cardiff University. In autumn 2021, Beky and an interdisciplinary team of staff and researchers at Cardiff University were awarded Welsh Government funding to run ‘ART LAB’. ART LAB is a public engagement project which aims to promote awareness of science through art and film. The team ran their first event in February 2022 as part of the Cardiff Science Festival. This event was on the topic of antimicrobial resistance and comprised a film screening and an art exhibition that showcased commissioned pieces and selected artwork from a public competition. Beky will talk about the ART LAB experience and how the event was received by artists, scientists and the public.
