Abstract

The primary goal of microbiome studies has ultimately been to increase agricultural productivity through manipulation of the microbiome and prevention of disease. This has produced some valuable insights into the relationships between crops and microorganisms however, there has been a relative lack of research into the presence of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms in the soil. This has become an area of focus in recent years. The antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis has been viewed almost entirely through a clinical lens. Recently however, 'One Health' approaches are becoming more common. In the case of AMR, this has involved investigating the presence and development of resistance genes in a broader context, such as the environment and in animals, along with the transmission routes of these genes. This talk focuses on the environment as a reservoir for resistance genes, the movement of these genes, how current clinically based classifications of resistance and susceptibility are not ideal for the study of AMR in the environment. To illustrate these concepts, results from the Resist AMR group will also be included and discussed. Resist-AMR (www.ResistAMR.com) is a multidisciplinary project tackling the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance in an agricultural context and beyond. The One Health approach in this group project is key for studying all facets of this issue and encouraging national mitigation measures
