Abstract

Neurodiversity describes the range of neurological differences within a population, whilst Neurodivergent is an umbrella term which refers to individuals who differ from the ‘typical’ path of thinking and processing. This includes but is not limited to Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder, Autism, Tourette’s syndrome, dyslexia, and dyspraxia. A recent study surveying neurodiversity in lab-based environments revealed that 48.1% of the 241 respondents identified as neurodivergent, which is double the global average at 20%. Neurodivergent individuals can face additional challenges within the workplace, often due to a lack of support or reasonable adjustments. This can hinder career progression and contribute to an increased risk of burnout and mental health difficulties. At the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2025, the second Disability and Neurodivergent Members’ Social was held alongside a poster presentation, to gather feedback from members on how accessibility within microbiology workplaces and events could be improved. Following this, we are launching ‘ND in Micro’, a new network aimed at individuals who identify as neurodivergent and hold a microbiology-based role. The aim of this network is to provide a safe space for neurodivergent microbiologists to share their lived experiences and interests, connect with others, and build a supportive community that can shape and advocate for more accessible research and working environments. The network welcomes new members, and feedback on how we can best serve neurodivergent microbiologists. Although not linked to the Microbiology Society, we are also open to hearing how the network can support the Society's equality/equity, diversity and inclusion goals.
