Abstract

Persistent structural and institutional barriers continue to limit equitable participation, progression, and successful outcomes for students and learners in the bioscience discipline in the United Kingdom. These barriers particularly affect students from historically underrepresented and underserved backgrounds and are reflected in the disparities observed across the sector in access and retention, academic achievement e.g. awarding gaps, sense of belonging, and progression into bioscience careers. This presentation investigates the institutional policies, pedagogical practices, and cultural norms that shape student success within undergraduate and postgraduate bioscience education. Drawing on evidence from tried and tested approaches, including departmental and institutional performance data, student outcome metrics, and qualitative insights from student and staff experiences, the critical structural factors associated with disparities in attainment and retention will be highlighted. By situating student success within a systems-level framework, this presentation proposes actionable recommendations for dismantling structural and institutional barrier, improve student outcomes and fostering equitable learning environments. Ultimately, improving student outcomes in the biosciences requires coordinated institutional transformation that aligns policy, pedagogy, and culture to support diverse learners and strengthen the future bioscience workforce.
