Abstract

My lab investigates how Gram-negative bacteria assemble and maintain their outer membrane, with a particular focus on the molecular mechanisms of lipid transport across the bacterial cell envelope. We combine structural biology, biochemistry and bacterial genetics to study these processes, which are central to envelope integrity and bacterial resistance to antibiotics. I established my independent research group at the University of Oxford in 2022 with support from an MRC Career Development Award. In this session, I will reflect on the ongoing rewards and challenges of setting up a lab, including selecting the right research environment, defining a clear scientific niche, recruiting and mentoring a multidisciplinary team, publishing effectively, and securing funding.
