Abstract

International students constitute the majority of enrolments on postgraduate bioscience programmes in the United Kingdom, yet they are frequently under-represented in industry engagement and professional networking. This presentation describes a student-initiated collaboration between Sheffield Hallam University and Labcorp Drug Development — a global contract research organisation spanning drug discovery, bioanalysis, pharmacokinetics, genetic toxicology, and pathology — repositioning international postgraduate students as architects of outreach rather than its recipients. The initiative began when an undergraduate student on industrial placement arranged a meeting between Labcorp staff and postgraduate course representatives. Over two academic years it grew into a funded field trip for Thirty postgraduate students, Labcorp scientists contributing to three taught modules (drug discovery, drug development, and toxicity testing), and developing student placements, a combined degree model, joint research projects, and a joint BMRC grant application. Impact was measured across three time points: pre-visit (T1, n = 25), post-visit (T2, n = 25), and a five-week follow-up (T3, n = 22). Mean scores across pharmaceutical industry understanding, academic relevance, career awareness, and student belonging rose at every wave (M = 3.98 → 4.27 → 4.41/5), countering the typical post-event fade-out. At five weeks, 91% reported sustained or increased enthusiasm for a pharmaceutical career and twelve of twenty-two had applied for a relevant role or placement. The case offers a transferable model for bioscience educators seeking sustainable, internationalised connections between curriculum and professional practice — and shows what is possible when student voice drives, rather than decorates, institutional outreach.
