Your opportunity to meet the President in Glasgow and Cambridge

As part of our commitment to developing, expanding and strengthening networks and the opportunities available to our members, the Microbiology Society will be continuing to host a series of Roadshow events in 2020 led by our President, Professor Judith Armitage. The first two events will take place in Glasgow and Cambridge.
Glasgow
The first event of the President’s 2020 tour of the UK and Ireland in fast approaching. Having visited Leeds, Newcastle, Dublin, Plymouth and Reading last year we are delighted to be kick-starting 2020 in Glasgow on the 19 February at the University of Strathclyde, where we will also be launching the first of our free mentoring exchange meetings that will be taking place over the course of 2020.
During the Roadshow event, delegates will listen to short talks from the President Judith Armitage, Chief Executive Peter Cotgreave, as well as Society member Emily Addington from Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Science who will explain how the Microbiology Society has supported her. This event is the perfect opportunity for delegates to connect with the Society, fellow members and non-members locally.
We’re encouraging members to join us for this event to celebrate our 75th anniversary and mark this milestone.
Professor Paul Hoskisson, who has made the event possible, said; ‘’We are delighted to host the Microbiology Society Roadshow at The Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, to showcase the Society, how their grants have helped with outreach activities in Scotland and also to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Society.’’
Mentoring exchange meetings
The first of our free mentoring exchange meetings will also take place ahead of the Roadshow at the University of Strathclyde on the 19 February. Join Dr Kay Guccione, Senior Lecturer in Academic Development at Glasgow Caledonian University, as she takes delegates through the fundamentals of mentoring to help individuals form productive and meaningful relationships that serve their needs. Delegates will also talk through different methods for approaching someone to help.

Cambridge
On the 28 April, the President will continue her journey and will be visiting the University of Cambridge and Hughes Hall, which from 1885 to 1895 was the Cambridge Training College for Women Teachers. Professor Judith Armitage will give a keynote talk on ‘Women and diversity in science’, followed by short talks from Chief Executive Peter Cotgreave and Society Champion Robert Will, who is currently based at Hughes Hall.
Robert will said; “I’m hoping for a really lovely afternoon hearing from Professor Judith Armitage and meeting other local members of the Society. From my admittedly limited experience, the best networking happens at these slightly smaller, more focused events, so if you are in the Cambridge area, stop by Hughes Hall on 28 April!”
By attending this event, you will have the perfect opportunity to meet with President Judith Armitage and other key members within the Society and network with like-minded people who live in the local area.
