Our expert members are contributing to UK and worldwide efforts to combat the impacts of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can infect a range of hosts. They are known to cause diseases including the common cold, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in humans.

Since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, the Microbiology Society has worked with our members on a number of activities and initiatives to help further their research, including digital events, press releases, journals collections, podcasts and blogs. Here you will find a digital collection of our content relating to SARS-CoV-2.

  • SARS-CoV-2 News

Access news and updates published by the Microbiology Society on the topic of SARS-CoV-2, including expert comments from our membership.

  • Press releases

The latest press releases published by the Microbiology Society addressing SARS-CoV-2 and ongoing research.

  • COVID-19 Response Case Studies

Read about the various responses to SARS-CoV-2 from our community of microbiologists. Our members’ experiences range from investigating SARS-CoV-2, participating in public outreach to working in diagnostic testing labs.

  • Blogs on the topic of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19

Explore blogs which include insights from members who have volunteered to work at the UK Lighthouse Laboratories, the first images of a coronavirus and access our Coronstream blog series.

  • Podcasts

The Microbiology Society has a podcast called Microbe Talk. Explore discussions relating to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19, as well as insights about ongoing research to help tackle the pandemic.

  • Why Microbiology Matters

Explore our digital collections of content which help showcase why microbiology matters. We will specifically look at the 'Understanding viruses and the challenges in microbiology' and 'Vaccines: the global challenge for microbiology'.

  • Members working in the field of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 research

Learn more about our members working in the field of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 research. We will be adding profiles of those conducting research in the field throughout the year.

  • SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 Online Workshop

On 29 July 2020, the Microbiology Society hosted the SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 Online Workshop, bringing together researchers from labs across the UK to discuss research on topics including the virus and its genes, pathology and immunology, and therapeutics and vaccines.

  • Coronavirus journal collection

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can infect a range of hosts. To allow the widest possible distribution of relevant research, the Microbiology Society has brought together articles from across our portfolio and made this content freely available.

  • MRC PPU & CVR Coronavirus Toolkit

The Reagents and Services division of the MRC PPU and the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) have generated expression plasmids, proteins and affinity purified polyclonal antibodies against each of the indicated SARS-CoV-2 and related coronavirus proteins. These can be ordered online for the pharmaceutical industry and academics worldwide in the fight against COVID-19.

  • ASM COVID-19 Research Registry

Visit the American Society for Microbiology’s registry, which includes top-ranked, COVID-19 research articles curated by experts and which serves as a resource for scientists working together to address fundamental science and accelerate scientific research on SARS-CoV-2.

  • Gain of function: experimental applications relating to potentially pandemic pathogens

This EASAC study debates the risks and benefits of research that modifies viruses to better understand their functioning (Gain of Function research), in particular their potential to cause pandemics. Special attention is given to viruses spreading from animals to humans and to human viruses spreading by aerosol route.
