Knocking Out Antimicrobial Resistance: a new cross-disciplinary project

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most urgent global threats to our healthcare systems, economies, the environment and animal health. Microbiologists in academic, industrial and clinical settings worldwide are at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to tackle AMR. We believe now is the time to act and focus on an interdisciplinary, solutions-driven approach in a ‘One Health’ context.

To this end, the Microbiology Society is leading the way with the Knocking Out AMR project, an ambitious, bold and extensive scheme of work aiming to promote feasible and effective solutions to AMR.

Priority solutions

Knocking Out AMR will focus on three priority solutions with the following objectives:

Therapeutics and Vaccines

Using the Society’s cross disciplinary expertise, the Knocking Out AMR project will support activities in key areas such as research and development of preventative measures and alternative therapeutics; interdisciplinary co-working in the antimicrobial pipeline; and the reduction of inappropriate antimicrobial exposure.

Diagnostics and Surveillance

Acting as a conduit between its expert membership and external stakeholders, the Knocking Out AMR project will support effective cross-sector integration of the unmet needs of those working across diagnostics and surveillance through effective knowledge sharing in the UK and internationally.

Policy Engagement

The Knocking Out AMR project aims to drive knowledge exchange between AMR experts and policymakers, while ensuring that the full diversity of voices of microbiologists working on AMR are heard, both in the UK and worldwide.
