Editor call for Access Microbiology

Access Microbiology is looking to appoint Editors to play a vital role in ensuring the publication of high-quality research and fostering engagement within the Microbiology community.

Responsibilities include overseeing peer review processes, making crucial editorial decisions, encouraging suitable contributions to the platform and act as a platform advocate. This position is unpaid but offers benefits such as one fee-free Open Access article a year, and access to an external conference travel fund, among others.

This is a great opportunity for experts in microbiology to shape the platform's future and contribute to the dissemination of research.

Editor and Senior Editor Role Description

 

Editor call for Journal of General Virology

We are looking for Editors to join Journal of General Virology to help ensure the publication of high-quality, impactful research. As an Editor, you will oversee peer review, make editorial decisions, and contribute to the journal’s strategic direction while representing the Microbiology Society in this public-facing role.

This voluntary role, involves managing submissions, communicating decisions with authors, soliciting high-quality contributions, championing the journal at conferences and on social media, and participating in Editorial Board activities. We welcome applicants with demonstrated excellence in an area of virology, particularly those with expertise in:

  • Positive-strand RNA viruses
  • Negative-strand RNA viruses
  • Plant viruses
  • Small DNA viruses
  • Fungal viruses
  • Prokaryotic viruses

We are seeking Editors who maintain an active research profile, have strong international networks, and understand the Society’s mission to promote virology and microbiology through its journals.

Editor and Senior Editor Role Description

 

Editor Mentee call for Access Microbiology

Editor Mentee Role:

Access Microbiology is an open research platform dedicated to publishing peer-reviewed studies across the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and more. It emphasises the significance of diverse research approaches, from replication studies to case reports, and actively encourages contributions that enhance methods and interdisciplinary collaboration within the microbiology community. 

Editor Mentees at Access Microbiology are early career microbiologists, with little to no editorial experience. We will pair Mentees with a Mentor who will be available to them for consultation and advice as you handle manuscripts. You will be responsible for arranging peer review of manuscripts on the open research platform, including reviewing automated review reports and ensuring authors comply with the platform policies. You will be trained and given support by the Editors-in-Chief and the Society staff to develop your editorial skills. You will play a key role in the platform, ensuring that we publish sound and rigorous papers.

There are three levels of Editors on the platform: Editor Mentors; Editor Mentees – who are usually new to the role of Editor; and Editors. Editor Mentors are senior researchers with previous editorial board and publishing experience, who support and assist Editor Mentees in soliciting content for the platform and for arranging peer review of manuscripts submitted.

This position is a public-facing role and the Editor Mentee acts as a representative of the Society.

Duties:

• Arranging for peer review of contributions submitted to the platform in accordance with the

guidelines laid down by the Society and the platform’s policies

• Communication with contributors concerning the acceptance, rejection or revision of

contributions

• Ensuring appropriate topic coverage and quality of contributions for publication

• Maintaining regular communication with the assigned Editor Mentor

• Soliciting suitable contributions and, where appropriate, submitting original contributions

• Providing advice and assistance in marketing the platform

• Attending meetings with the Editorial Board and the Society as appropriate.

Person Specification 

  • Experience in microbiology  
  • Supports and advocates for open science, and the policies and technologies that will facilitate it including, but not limited to, open access publishing and open data.  
  • Have an understanding of the role of the Microbiology Society in promoting microbiology, and the central role that publishing in society titles has in continuing these efforts.
