The Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects, and their practical uses. We have a worldwide membership of over 7,000 members who are based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools and we are one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe.

VOLUNTARY OPPORTUNITIES
Below is a list of opportunities for our members to participate in our governance and publishing activities to support the work of the Society.
Co-opted Trustee
The Microbiology Society is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity. It is governed by a Board of Trustees who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006. The Board of Trustees operates in compliance with the Society’s Articles of Association and Charity Commission guidance on good governance.
From 2025, the Society is constituting a new Board of Trustees that will be comprised of the Society’s three Executive Officers (President, General Secretary and Treasurer) and three elected members, plus up to three external experts. The role of the Board is to govern the organisation, provide the strategic direction of the Society and ensure its long-term financial sustainability.
The Microbiology Society is specifically looking for candidates with expertise in either the academic publishing business or charitable fundraising to co-opt to the Board of Trustees.

ACCESS MICROBIOLOGY EDITORS: CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
Access Microbiology is an open research platform dedicated to publishing peer-reviewed studies across the full spectrum of microscopic life forms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and more. It emphasises the significance of diverse research approaches, from replication studies to case reports, and actively encourages contributions that enhance methods and interdisciplinary collaboration within the microbiology community.
Editors of Access Microbiology are essential in promoting high-quality contributions and engaging with the microbiological community. Responsibilities include advocating for the platform, arranging peer reviews, communicating with contributors, and soliciting a range of submissions. Additionally you will have opportunities to contribute to the journal's strategic direction.
Person Specification
- Experience in microbiology, preferably with a wide breadth of expertise
- Some editorial experience working on STM academic journals
- Supports and advocates for open science, and the policies and technologies that will facilitate it including, but not limited to, open access publishing and open data
- Maintain an active research profile and preferably have some presence on social media e.g. X/Twitter

Editor Mentees at Access Microbiology are early-career microbiologists with little to no editorial experience. Editor Mentees will receive guidance from experienced Editor Mentors, allowing for skill development in a supportive environment. Responsibilities include coordinating peer reviews of manuscripts, soliciting submissions and ensuring authors comply with the platform policies.

Content ranges from comparative and functional genomics of model organisms to population-scale evolution, epidemiology and microbiome studies, and real-world genomics applications with clinical, veterinary or environmental relevance.
Senior Editors of Microbial Genomics play a key role in the journal, ensuring that we publish high-quality research and are engaged with the microbiological community. Your primary responsibility will be the editorial stewardship of a section of the journal, and this should be supplemented by activities which bring in content and raise the visibility of the journal and this section.

- Demonstrated excellence in the area of functional genomics.
- Maintain an active microbial genomics research profile.

Microbiology Editor
Microbiology brings together communities of scientists from all microbiological disciplines and from around the world. The journal is looking for new Editors to join the Microbiology Editorial Board.
Editors of Microbiology play a key role in the journal, ensuring that we publish high-quality research and are engaged with the microbiological community. Your main tasks will be arranging peer review of manuscripts submitted to the journal. You will also have opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction of the journal.
Microbiology covers research across the full breadth of the field of microbiology. Currently, we are accepting applications from across the remit of the journal but particularly welcome applications from those with expertise in 1) bacterial cell envelope biology and 2) fungal microbiology.
Person specification
- For this round of Editor recruitment, we are especially looking for experts in 1) bacterial cell envelope biology and 2) fungal microbiology.
