Society Champions
About the Champions Scheme
The Champions Scheme is essential in helping to raise awareness of the Microbiology Society and microbiology. Champions do this in their local area by initiating activities and events of their own or participating in Society-led activities.
Funding, guidance and promotion is provided by the Society to support Champions to organise activities and an online community of other Champions allows them to network with microbiologists all over the world.
To find out more about who our current Champions are and where they are based, you can Meet our Champions. Take a look at Champions events and activities to find out more about the activities they are organising and have organised in the past.
Becoming a Champion
To become a Champion, you must be a member of the Society. It does not matter how long you have been a member or what type of membership you have. We welcome Champions from a wide range of microbiology backgrounds, sectors and regions, who want to get involved with the Society’s activities.
Becoming a Champion is also a great way to enhance your professional development, showcase your work and build your professional networks.

Recruitment
Our ideal Champion is a good communicator with a passion for their subject material and a willingness to share this with others. In addition, we would like Champions to be comfortable answering questions about the benefits of Society publishing and membership. As a guide, over a 12-month period, Champions should aim to take part in two to three activities; we ask for a brief report on what these were towards the end of every year.
We operate two recruitment windows per year for the Champions Scheme, this year’s recruitment windows are as follows:
- 1 March–30 April 2024
- 2 September–31 October 2024
As part of the onboarding process, we also provide online training sessions, which are scheduled for:
- Thursday 23 May 2024; 14:00–16:00 BST (UK time)
- Tuesday 26 November 2024;14:00–16:00 GMT (UK time)
We are currently accepting applications from members based in Canada, Germany and the USA, or those working in industry or clincal settings.
