In 2017, Council launched a shadowing scheme which is a fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into the work of the Society and to gain a wealth of knowledge by experiencing first-hand our Council and Committee activities. We encourage you apply now, and get in involved in shaping the future of the organisation.
Successful applicants will be given the chance to familiarise themselves with the Society’s governance structures, and the work and responsibilities of Council and Committees, in line with our commitment to transparency and openness.
As the Society is both a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee, Council members are legally responsible as Trustees of the Charity and Directors of the Company. As such, they have a key role in shaping the work of the organisation. Eight Council members are elected by the membership, six of whom are appointed to key positions as Chairs of Committees.
We have placements for up to four members of Council to be shadowed in any one year. The relationship can be purely based on correspondence, or shadow members may attend one meeting of Council to get first-hand experience of how Council meetings are run.
Our Committees oversee delivery of the Society's strategic priorities and play a vital role in supporting Council in its activities. You can find out about the different Committees and their Terms of Reference on the Committees page.
Our seven Committees have different meeting schedules, so the number of placements we have available each year is dependent on the Committee. As with Council shadows, the relationship can be purely based on correspondence, or shadow members may attend one Committee meeting. It is up to the Committee host and the shadowing member to decide when they are paired.
Applications to shadow Council or Committees are accepted at any time. If you wish to attend Council or Committee meetings in person, this can be discussed with the relevant Chair. Eligible applications to the Shadowing Scheme will be reviewed by the relevant Chair within a month of acknowledgement of the application. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application and successful applicants will be introduced to their Committee host by email at the same time.

All members of the Society are eligible to apply for a shadow placement. At the end of the shadowing relationship, the shadowing member will be invited to provide feedback to the Society to improve the scheme and to encourage other members to participate.

- Name and membership number.
- A short statement about why you would like to participate, and aspirations for future involvement in the Society’s governing bodies (max. 500 words).
- A brief (one-page) CV outlining your relevant experience (ONLY for a position on Council).
