Safety considerations for targeting the oral microbiome
Most oral diseases are preventable, yet these conditions stubbornly remain the most prevalent group of diseases in humans worldwide. Unlike other sites in the body, maintaining oral health requires frequent intervention to control the oral microbiome. There are challenges to developing new oral care products since oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontitis typically take years to develop, so clinical trials can be lengthy and expensive. There is an urgent need to find robust biomarkers that give early indications of unsafe perturbations to the oral microbiome and provide timely warning signs for testing novel oral care products. Here, I will discuss our current understanding of the oral microbiome and the potential for identification of microbial biomarkers that can give early indications of shifts towards dysbiosis and damage.
