The Scientific Seminar Series is designed to reach the microbiology community to disseminate knowledge across its professional networks. The events are designed as a regularly repeated series of short (typically 1–2 hour) online meetings.
The Journal of Medical Microbiology (JMM) monthly seminar series is designed to showcase high-quality and timely research from the journal’s key authors. JMM welcomes everything from laboratory research to clinical trials, including bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology. The JMM seminars will reflect this same comprehensive scientific content.

Campylobacter is the leading global cause of >160 million gastrointestinal infections worldwide. In the UK, it causes 630,000 cases and costs the UK economy £1 billion annually. This seminar series explores the epidemiology, antibiotic resistance, and virulence mechanisms of major pathogenic Campylobacter strains isolated from various host reservoirs in Scotland. It is the largest epidemiological study of Campylobacter in the world where use of different source attribution models is explored. It considers the important of host reservoirs and the ways in which different practices at urban and rural level influence human infection. Effective intervention strategies such as biosecurity and immune-based methods to reduce bacterial loads on farms (pre-harvest), carcass decontamination and freezing, limit contamination (post-harvest measures) are considered. Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Campylobacter needs coordinated, multidisciplinary action across the entire food chain and strengthening food safety based on sustainable farming practices, responsible antimicrobial use, and innovative control measures can play a major role in safeguarding global public health.
