Eligibility requirements

Society Event Grant

Eligible members can apply for funding to attend the Society Annual Conference or one other Society meeting per year.

Full, Full Concessionary, Postgraduate, Undergraduate Members

Must have held membership for a minimum period of one year and paid two consecutive membership fees.

External Event Grant

Funds are available to support eligible members presenting work at scientific or education meetings, short courses or training events relevant to microbiology.

Full, Full concessionary and Postgraduate Student Members.

Must not have received this grant in the previous calendar year.

Must have held membership for a minimum period of one year and paid two consecutive membership fees.

International Development Fund

The Society aims to assist microbiologists in countries with low-income or lower-middle-income economies (as defined by the World Bank) through the International Development Fund.

Full, Full concessionary and Postgraduate Student Members.

 

Must not have received this grant in the previous calendar year.

Must have held membership for a minimum period of one year and paid two consecutive membership fees.

Education and Outreach Grant  

Eligible members can apply for funding to support relevant science engagement or outreach initiatives, engage new audiences and raise awareness of any aspect of microbiology and the impact of microbiology.

Full, Full concessionary and Postgraduate Student Members.

 

Must have held membership for a minimum period of one year and paid two consecutive membership fees.

Research Visit Grant

Funds are available to support members who are planning a short (one- to three-month) research visit to another laboratory.

Full, Full concessionary and Postgraduate Student Members.

 

Minimum of one-year membership and two consecutive membership payments.

Full and Full Concessionary Members within the first five years of appointment to their first post as a lecturer.

Postgraduate Members registered for a PhD or employed in a Postdoctoral research position.

Harry Smith Vacation Studentship

A limited number of awards are available to enable undergraduates to work on microbiological research projects during the summer vacation. Applications must be made by the project supervisor on behalf of a named student.

The scheme provides an insight into the world of research for students and gives early and mid-career scientists the opportunity to gain supervision experience.

Full and Full Concessionary Members.

Full or Full Concessionary Members working in a Higher Education Institution or Research Institute.

Applicants must be PhD qualified or hold a senior research or academic position.

Minimum of one-year membership and two consecutive membership payments.

Students must be registered for a degree at an institution, in any area of biosciences, medical, dental, or veterinary science and have completed two years of study but not started their final year.

Microbiology in Society Award

Eligible members can apply for up to £5,000 for organising any education, outreach or public engagement work that promotes the art and science of microbiology.

Full, Full concessionary and Postgraduate Student Members.

The proposed activity must be related to microbiology.

The proposed activity must be novel in approach or build on an existing activity.

The activity should lead to a large-scale impact on a regional, national, or international level.

Society Supported Conference Grant

Eligible members can apply for funding to support speaker travel and accommodation expenses for events organised by a member in any field of microbiology, independently or in partnership with another Society.

Full, Full Concessionary and Postgraduate Members.

Must have held membership for a minimum period of one year and paid two consecutive membership fees.

EC Forum Event Fund

Contribute to the costs of events organised by eligible EC Forum members
