Tony Trinci Award
The British Mycological Society and Microbiology Society Tony Trinci Award is presented annually to celebrate excellent mycology.
The British Mycological Society was founded 125 years ago to promote the scientific study of fungi and has since grown to be one of the major mycological societies in the world. The Society is committed to promoting cutting-edge scientific research, fungal conservation and species recording and the provision of educational resources. As a charity and membership body, the Society is open to all who are interested in supporting, promoting and studying the diverse and fascinating fungal kingdom.
The Microbiology Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. It has a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes, schools and other organisations. Our members have a unique depth and breadth of knowledge about the discipline. The Society’s role is to help unlock and harness the potential of that knowledge.
The Tony Trinci award was established in 2023 to celebrate great mycology and to honour the late Professor Trinci, who was President of both Societies. The award is given annually to a researcher deemed to be presenting the best mycological science at one of each Society’s main scientific meetings.
The recipient of the award receives £1,000 and a certificate – awarded at either the Microbiology Society’s or the British Mycological Society’s Annual Conference.
Eligibility
The purpose of the award is for mycology research worth celebrating in honour of Tony Trinci. All researchers in the field of mycology who submit an abstract to a relevant BMS or Microbiology Society event are eligible for the award, irrespective of career stage.
How to enter
If you are eligible for the Tony Trinci Award, you can enter your abstract for consideration at the following events:
- BMS Annual Scientific Meeting (July)
All abstracts submitted to the BMS Annual Scientific Meeting will be eligible and considered for the award. - Microbiology Society Annual Conference (April)
Those submitting abstracts to the Microbiology Society Annual Conference can self-select to enter their abstract for consideration for the Tony Trinci award as part of the submission process, provided their research is in the field of mycology. Entrants will be asked to provide a short statement on why their research is eligible as part of the submission process. Eligible abstracts selected to present (oral or poster) at the Annual Conference will be considered for the award. - Where another Microbiology Society event has a specific mycological focus, relevant accepted abstracts may be considered for the award.
Award process
A judging panel is convened in March each year and is made up of representatives from the field of mycology from the BMS and the Microbiology Society. The panel will select the winner whose work best raises the profile of and celebrates excellent mycological research. In addition to the £1,000 prize award, the costs of the Award winner to attend the event where the award will be presented will be covered by the Society hosting the event.
