Posted on October 23, 2025   by Microbiology Society

The Microbiology Society is saddened to share the untimely passing of Dr Girish Beedessee, an active and much-respected member of the Society.

As a dedicated member of the Society, Girish served on the Eukaryotic Division and as a member of the editorial board for Access Microbiology. Through these roles, he supported the advancement of microbiology and championed open, collaborative science.

Girish was Assistant Professor in Applied Sciences and a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow at Northumbria University, where his research investigated the evolutionary processes that shape secondary metabolism in protists. Prior to this, he held a Herchel Smith Fellowship at the University of Cambridge.

In his free time, Girish was passionate about ocean and environmental sciences, which he engaged with through involvement in ‘The Clean Planet Peninsula’.

Girish is remembered by his friends and colleagues in the Society as a kind, warm and generous person. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, students, and colleagues at this difficult time.
