22 January 2024

Access Microbiology, the Microbiology Society’s open research platform, is delighted to announce Seána Duggan and James Redfern as its new Deputy Editors-in-Chief.
Seána Duggan is an Early Career Research Fellow at the Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Mycology at the University of Exeter, where she researches human co-infections. Seána earned her PhD at Friedrich Schiller University, Jena (Germany). Prior to her post-doctoral work at the University of Bristol, Seána worked in academic publishing, holding operational and editorial roles. During this time, she developed her passion for transparent and equitable scientific publishing. Seána’s expertise spans pathogenic fungi and bacteria, biofilms, omics, interspecies interactions, innate immunity and social justice in infection research.

James Redfern is a Reader in Microbiology at Manchester Metropolitan University. His research involves the control of microorganisms in different/realistic environments using antibiofilm and antimicrobial technologies and includes work on method development, standardisation, and regulatory science amongst other interests. James is keen to share his science through public engagement and has long been involved with the Society, most recently on the Impact and Influence committee, before joining the Access Microbiology Editorial Board in 2022.
We greatly look forward to Seána and James starting their new roles with Access as the platform continues to grow.
