We have a worldwide membership of over 7,000 members who are based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools, and we are one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe.

Editor call for Microbial Genomics
We are looking for Editors to join Microbial Genomics to help ensure the publication of high-quality, impactful research. As an Editor, you will oversee peer review, make editorial decisions with support from a Senior Editor, and contribute to the journal’s strategic direction while representing the Microbiology Society in this public-facing role.
This voluntary role, involves managing submissions, communicating decisions with authors, soliciting high-quality contributions, championing the journal at conferences and on social media, and participating in Editorial Board activities. We welcome applicants with demonstrated excellence across the breadth of microbial genomics, particularly: environmental microbiology, methods in microbial genomics, viral and fungal comparative genomics, genome epidemiology, (meta)genomics, symbioses, zoonotic pathogens, plasmid–host and phage–host evolution. We are seeking Editors who maintain an active research profile, have strong international networks, and understand the Society’s mission to promote microbiology through its journals.

Senior Editor call for Microbial Genomics
We are looking for Senior Editors to join Microbial Genomics to share editorial oversight of the ‘Pathogens and Epidemiology’ section of the journal. This voluntary role involves contributing to the journal’s strategic direction while representing the Microbiology Society in this public-facing role.
As a Senior Editor, you will guide section development, recommend Editorial Board members, solicit high-quality contributions, champion the journal at conferences and on social media, and participate in Editorial Board activities. We welcome applicants with prior editorial experience, who maintain an active research profile with a demonstrated excellence in microbial genomics, have strong international networks, and understand the Society’s mission to promote microbiology through its journals.

Editor call for Journal of General Virology
We are looking for Editors to join Journal of General Virology to help ensure the publication of high-quality, impactful research. As an Editor, you will oversee peer review, make editorial decisions, and contribute to the journal’s strategic direction while representing the Microbiology Society in this public-facing role.
This voluntary role, involves managing submissions, communicating decisions with authors, soliciting high-quality contributions, championing the journal at conferences and on social media, and participating in Editorial Board activities. We welcome applicants with demonstrated excellence in an area of virology, particularly those with expertise in plant RNA viruses. We are seeking Editors who maintain an active research profile, have strong international networks, and understand the Society’s mission to promote virology and microbiology through its journals.

Co-opted Trustee
The Microbiology Society is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity. It is governed by a Board of Trustees, who are also the directors of the company for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006. The Board of Trustees operates in compliance with the Society’s Articles of Association and Charity Commission guidance on good governance.
From the start of 2025, the Society constituted a new Board of Trustees that is comprised of the Society’s three Executive Officers (President, General Secretary and Treasurer) and three elected members, plus up to three external experts. The role of the Board is to govern the organisation, provide the strategic direction of the Society and ensure its long-term financial sustainability.
The Microbiology Society is specifically looking for candidates with expertise in either the academic publishing business or charitable fundraising to co-opt to the Board of Trustees.
