Who are we?

National and international Microbiology Society members interested in educating students at all levels of study and members of the public about microbiology.

What do we do?

  • Provide a space for educators to share ideas and form collaborations
  • Support members to disseminate their practice
  • Promote education- and outreach-related activities
  • Raise the profile of education, outreach and public engagement research
  • Connect with national and international educators

Any member of the Society can get involved. The network currently includes colleagues at many career stages, from PhD students and early-career researchers to established academics. Please email [email protected] if you would like to join.

Environmental Impact Working Group

Who are we?

The Environmental Impact Working Group, set up following the Council’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of the Society, was a time-limited group of members convened to champion the role of microbiology and the Society’s membership in meeting the challenges of climate change and sustainability.

What do we do?

The Working Group was tasked with developing the Society’s environmental impact action plan. The action plan, which is available to download below, includes the impact of both the Society as an organisation and knowledge sharing, encouraging action and supporting change for members. The action plan will be implemented from 2024 to 2027 in line with the Society's strategy period. Alongside the action plan, the Working Group has provided a statement on the Society's commitment to environmental sustainability, which can also be found below.

As recommended by the Working Group, the Society has signed up as a supporter of the Wellcome Trust's Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice.

Women Microbiologists Network

Who are we?

National and international members of the Microbiology Society, women microbiologists, particularly those working in or aspiring to careers in academia. The network brings together members across all career stages, from PhD students and early career researchers to established academics.

What do we do?

  • Provide a supportive and inclusive space for women microbiologists to connect, share experiences and learn from one another
  • Explore challenges and opportunities faced by women in academic microbiology, including the ‘leaky pipeline’
  • Support members’ wellbeing, professional development and career progression
  • Facilitate peer support, discussion and collaboration through online and in-person activities
  • Host regular online meetings and invite speakers to address topics of interest to the community

How can you get involved in the community?

  • Attend Women Microbiologists Network sessions at Annual Conference
  • Take part in group discussions and interactive activities during network events
  • Share your experiences, ideas and priorities to help shape future network activities

How can you get involved in the network?

Any member of the Microbiology Society can get involved. To join the Women Microbiologists Network, you must be a Society member. Please complete the sign-up form and a member of staff will invite you to join the Women Microbiologists Network Basecamp.

The Basecamp provides chat tools for discussion and collaboration and supports regular (expected monthly) online meetings throughout the year. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].
