The Society offers a limited number of Vacation Studentships to enable undergraduates to work on microbiological research projects during their summer vacation. The scheme also gives early- and mid-career scientists the opportunity to gain supervision experience.
Meet the Vacation Studentships receipients and learn more about their journey.
What is your name and institution?
Narjis Aftab, Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Please can you tell us why you applied for the Vacation Studentship?
Driven by a strong passion to advance my academic and career goals in microbiology, I applied for the Harry Smith Vacation studentship to gain hands-on experience and insights into scientific research and laboratory work while also expanding my professional network.
How did you feel when you found out your application was successful?
I was thrilled to learn that my application was successful and eagerly anticipated embarking on this exciting and meaningful journey. The recognition of my hard work and dedication filled me with a profound sense of accomplishment and motivation.
How would you go about explaining your research to someone who may not understand science?
Under the supervision of Dr. Sarah Maddocks, I investigated the efficacy of some essential plant oils from the Lamiaceae family in combating bacteria that form stubborn biofilms in chronic wound infections and used them to formulate a topical antimicrobial hydrogel.
What have you learnt from your experience?
Alongside mastering new techniques and using specialised equipment and software not typically encountered during my degree, I gained valuable insights into experimental design and execution. I also learned how to present data effectively, engage in critical thinking, and view negative results as informative rather than setbacks. Also, my confidence and comfort in presenting and discussing ideas grew immensely, a skill I consider essential for success.
How do you think this vacation will help your career progression?
This studentship provided me with specialised skills and invaluable hands-on experience that significantly enhanced my expertise, competitiveness and credentials in the job market. It facilitated networking with professionals and researchers, paving the way for future collaborations and job opportunities. Additionally, it allowed me to develop crucial skills in project management, leadership, and time management, which I believe will support me in my future endeavours and career growth.
Why is support, such as this grant provided by the Microbiology Society, so important?
Grants like this from the Microbiology Society are important because they provide essential training, practical experience and valuable insights for developing scientists into real-world applications and job environments. They also help us develop critical skills and enhance our career prospects. Moreover, by offering financial support, they enable significant research into crucial areas that might otherwise not be possible.
