Overview

The Microbiology Society is hosting a free networking event, organised by our members, to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community and it is open to everyone who would like to participate.

Following the results of a recent survey performed by the Society, we will highlight and discuss the challenges that LGBTQ+ microbiologists face in their careers and everyday work. We will also discuss ways the Society can support LGBTQ+ scientists in the future. Participants will have the opportunity to talk about their experiences as well as interact with other LGBTQ+ members.

The event will take place in the Lounge, a private room in one of Belfast’s longest running pubs, Robinsons Bar. With Titanic inspired interiors, Robinsons is located just one minute's walk from Belfast City Hall.

Join us for an evening of fun and celebration over drinks and nibbles from 18:30–20:00 on Tuesday 5 April.

Organisers:

  • Bruno Francesco Rodrigues de Oliveira (Fluminense Federal University, Brazil)
  • Daniel Gonçalves-Carneiro (Rockefeller University, USA)
  • Kevin Maringer (The Pirbright Institute, UK)
  • I’ah Donovan Banfield (University of Liverpool, UK)

Timings:

We appreciate that many of you may be watching the Hot Topic session which finishes at 18:30 and/or attending the Microbiology 75th Anniversary drinks reception at the Town Hall which starts at 20:00. Please do not worry if this means you’ll need to arrive late or leave early – it’s an informal event, so pop in whenever you can. The bar will also remain open after 20:00 for anyone who wishes to stay after the event has finished.

Programme:

There is no fixed programme for this event, and it will mainly be an opportunity for informal networking, however Kevin Maringer will provide a short presentation and we’ll be asking those who are comfortable doing so to share thoughts on their experiences and how we can support LGBTQ+ members of the Society, so feel free to have a think about this beforehand.

Drinks and nibbles:

Drinks vouchers will be provided for free drinks, the drinks available will be specified on the vouchers and will include soft drinks options. Once you’ve used your vouchers, you will also be able to purchase drinks from the bar.

We will be providing finger food which you can help yourselves to, this will include vegan/vegetarian options and if you have specified any other dietary requirements these will also be catered for. If you have any questions on the night, please ask a member of venue or Society staff.

Alcohol-free zone:

There will be an alcohol-free area available for any attendees who are not drinking alcohol and would prefer to be surrounded by others in the same position. However, please don’t feel obliged to stay in this area if you are not drinking.
