  • Society Events grant

    Funds are available to support eligible members attending the Society Annual Conference or one other Society meeting per year.

  • External event grant

    Funds are available to support eligible members presenting work at scientific or education meetings, short courses or training events relevant to Microbiology.

  • Harry Smith Vacation Studentships

    The Society offers a limited number of awards to enable undergraduates to work on microbiological research projects during the summer vacation. Applications must be made by the project supervisor on behalf of a named student.

  • Research Visit grant

    The Society offers grants of up to £3,000 to support members who are planning a short (one- to three-month) research visit to another laboratory.

  • Outreach and Engagement Grants

    Grants up to £1000 to support relevant science outreach or public engagement initiatives that engage new audiences in the art and science in any aspect of microbiology.

  • Society-Supported Conference grant

    Awards of up to £2,000 are available to members who wish to organise a conference (in person or virtual) in any field of microbiology, either independently or in partnership with another Society.

  • Unlocking Potential grant

    Thanks to the Unlocking Potential Fund, the Unlocking Potential Grant is available to early and mid-career members who may require an extra level of support to help them deal with circumstances that threaten to hold them back from achieving what they could. Each grant will be of the value of up to £5000 per person, as part of a bespoke package or ‘toolkit’ for career development.

  • International Development Fund

    The Society aims to assist microbiologists in countries with low-income or lower-middle-income economies (as defined by the World Bank) through the International Development Fund.
