Microbiology Editors: Call for expressions of interest
19 January 2026
Microbiology brings together communities of scientists from all microbiological disciplines and from around the world.
We are looking for Editors to join Microbiology to help ensure the publication of high-quality, impactful research. As an Editor, you will oversee peer review, make editorial decisions with support from a Senior Editor, and contribute to the journal’s strategic direction while representing the Microbiology Society in this public-facing role.
This voluntary role involves managing submissions, communicating decisions with authors, soliciting high-quality contributions, championing the journal at conferences and on social media, and participating in Editorial Board activities. We are seeking Editors who maintain an active research profile, have strong international networks, and understand the Society’s mission to promote microbiology through its journals.
We welcome applicants with demonstrated excellence across the breadth of microbiology, but are currently particularly looking for applicants with expertise in:
Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology
- Biotechnology, biomanufacturing
- Biosafety and biocontainment
- Engineered microbial consortia
- Metabolic engineering and pathway design
- Bioinformatics and computational microbiology
- Molecular and microbial genetics, microbial physiology, anaerobic metabolism
Regulation, Sensing and Signalling
- Bacterial physiology/metabolism and its regulation
- Second messenger signalling
- Bacterial gene regulation
- Bacterial adaptation to their environment
- Bacterial stress responses (including against antimicrobials)
- Bacterial host adaptations
Antimicrobials and Antimicrobial Resistance
- Mode of action of new and existing antimicrobials
- Intrinsic and acquired mechanisms of resistance
- Evolution of resistance
- Genetics of resistance, including mechanisms of horizontal transfer of resistance genes
- Mechanisms of tolerance to antimicrobials and biocides
- Identification and characterisation of novel antimicrobials
If you are interested in joining the Microbiology board, please send your expression of interest to [email protected] with your CV and a cover letter by Monday 16 February 2026.
The Microbiology Society is committed to creating an inclusive culture that supports equality and diversity and fully reflects both its membership and the global microbiology community. The Society seeks to actively encourage all practices that reflect a diverse society.
