The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce the winner of the 2024 Microbiology in Society Award, Jody Winter.

Jody is a Principal Lecturer in Microbiology with expertise in antibiotic resistance and extensive experience in education, training and outreach on microbiology, antibiotic resistance and infection control with students, healthcare workers and the public. She leads microbiology education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and is also the community outreach lead for the Department of Biosciences at NTU. She has supervised 7 successful MSc research projects on antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the local river catchment area in recent years.

The Microbiology in Society Award is given annually to a member of the Microbiology Society for an education, outreach or public engagement initiative that promotes the art and science of microbiology. The award recognises projects that inspire or educate people to enable them to make informed decisions about everyday issues surrounding microbiology.

Jody said of her award:  I'm absolutely delighted to receive the Microbiology in Society Award on behalf of our team for our citizen science project "To paddle or not to paddle - what's in our river?" We will be running a program of events over the next three years involving local people in water sampling at the sites they access most often in the Severn-Trent river catchment area. We hope to raise awareness of the importance of microbiological analysis and increase participants' knowledge about infection control and antimicrobial resistance while generating data on the prevalence of AMR bacteria at high-traffic river sites. Thank you, Microbiology Society!
