New comic for European Antibiotics Awareness Day
18 November 2015
To coincide with European Antibiotics Awareness Day, and as part of World Antibiotic Awareness Week, we have created a new comic for primary-age children on antibiotic resistance. This adds to our comic series on Marvellous Microbes, and joins our other resources on antibiotic resistance.
The comic tells the story of a brother and sister, one who has a bacterial throat infection and the other a viral infection. They visit the doctor and learn about how antibiotics work and how they are best used.
This new comic, aimed at children aged 7-11, is another example of the Society’s dedication to the global issue of antibiotic resistance, and hopes to encourage children and families to investigate further. For older students and adults, our factfile on antibiotics is a great starting place for learning more about the history of antibiotics, what resistance is, and why it’s an important topic to discuss.
The Society has had a successful year looking for new antibiotics in the soil as part of the Small World Initiative, working with school students, undergraduate students and members of the public. We are also engaging with policy-makers and parliamentarians through the Learned Society Partnership on Antimicrobial Resistance (LeSPAR) and have covered the topic extensively on our blog.
World Antibiotic Awareness Week is from 16–22 November in 2015, and is organised by the World Health Organization.
