Professional development and networking at Annual Conference 2018

The Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2018 takes place 9–13 April, and, in addition to the scientific programme, the Society will be hosting a range of events including professional development sessions for delegates wishing to enhance their skills and a series of social events to enable delegates to network. All the additional events aim to enhance your conference experience to ensure your time at Conference is rewarding and enjoyable.
Monday 9 April
Teaching Microbiology in Higher Education
Join this half-day symposium of interactive sessions and network with others involved in teaching. Learn about novel techniques and digital platforms introduced in the lecture theatre and innovative ways of teaching. The symposium will also enable you to be part of an ongoing network for delegates to continue to share current pedagogical approaches. Tickets are priced at £10 each.

Pre-Conference Networking Workshop
The Early Career Microbiologists’ Forum Executive Committee will be hosting an evening of interactive games and networking. Meet delegates ahead of conference and brush up on your networking skills. Tickets are priced at £20 each.

Drinks Reception
The drinks reception is included in the registration rate and offers a relaxed environment to speak to fellow delegates and invited speakers, as well as view posters and speak to presenters about their work. Booking not required.

Funders Roundtable
Representatives from funding bodies, including BBSRC, NERC, MRC and the Wellcome Trust, will provide essential insight into their expectations for successful grant applications. Gain valuable insight into the grant making processes and what each funding body looks for when reviewing applications for research funding. There will also be ample opportunity to ask questions and interact with the representatives. Free event, requires booking.

Society Quiz and Games Night
The quiz is quickly becoming a key feature of the Annual Conference! It is the perfect opportunity to have some fun with fellow general knowledge buffs. This year, the venue offers games to keep the night going once the quiz finishes. We are looking forward to seeing your shuffleboard skills! Tickets are priced at £22.50 each.
Wednesday 11 April
Exploring Data Tools and Resources at EMBL-EBI
The European Bioinformatics Institute will introduce delegates to a range of data resources and tools in this hands-on practical workshop. Explore the services available and learn how to search, access and manage data. Bring your laptop along and gain tips on best practice for managing your data and preparing it for submission. Free event, requires booking.

Engaging in Science Policy
In collaboration with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), the Microbiology Society will be hosting a workshop on the role of research in parliament and government. Hear about how to engage with science policy-makers and develop your skills to communicate effectively in a policy environment. Free event, requires booking.
Thursday 12 April
End of Conference party – Bavarian Night
The Bavarian night promises to be full of fun, steins, dancing and laughs! The Oompah Band will be on site to ensure you have a good time in the spirit of the traditional German beer hall. Feel free to get your dirndl out of the closet and join us to celebrate the last night of what will no doubt be another great Conference. The evening will, of course, include Bavarian food. Tickets are priced at £30 each.
