The Microbiology Society has coordinated a response to a consultation launched by the Government of Ireland Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science on a Higher Education Research-Policy Engagement Framework.

In line with the commitment under Impact 2030, Ireland’s Research and Innovation Strategy, to strengthen connections between government departments and the public research system, this consultation considers the need for a framework to enhance the relevance and impact of research in Higher Education Institutions to public policy development.

We consulted with Microbiology Society members that have direct experience of the Irish Higher Education system, and submitted a response that reflects their opinions and experiences. In our response, we highlight that there are currently minimal visible opportunities to formally or informally engage with national policy activities in Ireland. We also provide recommendations for driving engagement, and flag tried and tested mechanisms for facilitating knowledge exchange.
