The Microbiology Society is pleased to announce the winners of our 2026 Prizes, which will be awarded at Society’s Annual Conference 2026 in Belfast from 13–16 April, where the winners will present their Prize Lectures. The winners are nominated by, and selected by, our membership.  
 
The Microbiology Society’s Prizes recognise excellence and are awarded to those making significant contributions in the field of microbiology, based on nominations received from across the membership. Winners are selected for their work to advance understanding of microbiology and champion the contribution made by microbiology, our members and their work in addressing global challenges. 

The Microbiology Society, together with the British Mycological Society, is delighted to announce Dr Harry Chown of Imperial College London, UK, as the winner of the 2025 Tony Trinci Award. Harry will give his award presentation, ‘The pangenome of Aspergillus fumigatus highlights the dynamics of gene gain-loss over evolutionary time-scales in a human fungal pathogen’ at the British Mycological Society’s Annual Scientific Meeting from 14-17 July 2025, at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK.

Each year, the Microbiology Society awards the Translational Microbiology Prize Lecture (formerly the Unilever Colworth Prize Lecture) to an individual who has made a significant contribution to translational microbiology.

Ahead of the Translational Microbiology Prize Lecture, Julia Sanchez-Garrido interviewed Professor David Aanensen to learn more about his career and how it feels to win a Microbiology Society prize.

The Marjory Stephenson Prize is the principal prize of the Microbiology Society, awarded for an outstanding contribution of current importance in microbiology. 

Ahead of the Marjory Stephenson Lecture, Early Career microbiologist Stelinda Peros interviewed Professor George Salmond to learn more about his career and how it feels to win a Microbiology Society prize.

The Microbiology Society is delighted to announce the recipients of the 2024 Outreach Prize – Dr Amanda Jones, Andrew Bell, Callum Crawford and Dr Helen Hooper at Northumbria University, UK, for the team project ‘What is a microorganism and where do they grow?’. The Outreach Prize is awarded to the team in recognition of their efforts and commitment to raise awareness of microbiology among future generations.

The Microbiology Society is pleased to announce the finalists of the 2023 Sir Howard Dalton Young Microbiologist of the Year competition.

The Microbiology Society has extended the nomination deadline for the 2024 Marjory Stephenson Prize Lecture, 2024 Peter Wildy Prize Lecture, 2024 Translational Microbiology Prize Lecture, and 2025 Prize Medal until 20 June 2023.

Each year, the Microbiology Society awards the Fleming Prize to an individual who has made a distinct contribution to microbiology early in their career.

Ahead of the Fleming Prize Lecture, ECM Forum Executive Committee member, Kelly Capper-Parkin interviewed Dr Tanmay Bharat to learn more about his career and how it feels to win a Microbiology Society prize.

Each year the Microbiology Society awards the Peter Widly Prize for outstanding contributions to microbiology education or the communication of microbiology to the public. The Peter Wildy Prize is named after distinguished virologist and much-loved teacher Peter Wildy, who was President of the Society from 1978 to 1981.

Ahead of the Peter Wildly Prize 2023 lecture, Freya Allen interviewed Professor Iruka N Okeke to learn more about her career and how it feels to win a Microbiology Society prize.
