The Microbiology Society’s second Focused Meeting of the year, Anaerobe 2021: The Microbiota and Beyond, took place digitally on 15–16 July 2021. The aim of the event was to provide clinical microbiologists, infectious disease researchers and specialists with insights into the current and future impact of anaerobic bacteria in human health and disease. The Antimicrobial drug discovery from traditional and historical medicine Focused Meeting took place at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford on 29 October. This was a pilot meeting which aimed to bring together researchers from diverse fields of microbiology, chemistry, botany and the history of medicine, as well as industry contacts. It was hoped that the event would facilitate networking, collaboration and knowledge exchange through a series of flash talks and round-table discussions. We spoke with one of the meeting organisers, Dr Freya Harrison, about what she is looking forward to at this pilot meeting and the importance of developing a cohesive research network.

The British Yeast Group Focused Meeting 2019 was held in Newcastle from 26–28 June. This year’s theme focused on ‘discovery to impact.’ The event promised to be a great opportunity for early career yeast researchers to share their research, network and strengthen relationships in the British yeast community. Anaerobe 2019: Changing perceptions of anaerobic bacteria; from pathogen to the normal microbiota and back is taking place 13–14 June 2019 at Jurys Inn Cardiff. The meeting is being organised by the Microbiology Society in collaboration with the Society for Anaerobic Microbiology and Welsh Microbiological Association.
