Increasing the scope of Access Microbiology

Following feedback from our members, we have increased the scope of our new, open access journal, Access Microbiology to include papers that discuss pedagogy, the science of teaching.

Access Microbiology Mentor Scheme Q&A

Access Microbiology is the newest journal from the Microbiology Society. This unique, fully open access publication covers the full spectrum of microbial life, and all approaches to the science of microbiology. One of the aspects of Access Microbiology that makes it unique is the editorial board; early career researchers who want to develop editorial skills are paired with experienced editors who they can go to for queries and advice on editorial matters. We asked mentee Dr Helina Marshall and mentor Professor Jeff Cole about their respective roles and experiences so far.

The Microbiology Society and Open Access

Over the summer, the Microbiology Society publishing and policy teams worked together to re-align our Open Access position statement with our publishing practices, and the updated policy was approved by Council on 7 September.

Policy Lunchbox: Review on Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial-resistant infections are an increasing global threat, serious enough that in July 2014 the then-UK Prime Minister David Cameron asked Lord Jim O’Neill to lead a major independent Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, to analyse the global challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and to propose international solutions to tackle the problem.

Each month, the Microbiology Society publishes the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM), which details newly discovered species of bacteria, fungi and protists. Here are a few of the new species that have been discovered and the places they’ve been found. The full papers are available to journal subscribers, but the abstracts are free to read.

These are the Champions: Sagar Aryal
