Microbiology Outlooks: empowering our community to shape the future of microbiology research

Posted on June 12, 2025   by Microbiology Society

At the Microbiology Society, we are dedicated to amplifying the voices of our members, reflecting the diverse expertise across our community. In 2025, Microbiology Outlooks joins our established portfolio to meet the evolving needs of our community, empowering members to share insights across disciplines to drive the future of microbiology research.

Publishing authoritative reviews and forward-looking perspectives across the breadth of microbiology, Microbiology Outlooks provides a platform to advance scientific understanding across microbiology-related subjects and inform the direction of research, policy and practice for societal benefit.

Professor Kim Hardie of the University of Nottingham, Chair of the Microbiology Society Publishing Panel, comments: "The new journal, Microbiology Outlooks, is the ideal opportunity for us to shape the future of microbiology research and ensure that it has the greatest societal impact. With a membership that spans the breadth of microbiology, we are ideally placed to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time, from the threat of antimicrobial resistance to food security and climate change. Hearing directly from our members about what researchers need in their fields will be inspirational and galvanise step-change impact for everyone – be it as an authoritative review summarising the state of the art or a forward-looking perspective that explores the challenges still to be overcome."

In 1945, the Microbiology Society was founded by visionary microbiologists including Alexander Fleming and Marjory Stephenson – to bring together disciplines in microbiology in the interest of scientific progress. In our 80th year, Microbiology Outlooks extends this goal, facilitating cross-disciplinary dialogue to address current and emerging global microbiological challenges.

We welcome proposals for timely reviews and insightful perspective pieces from across microbiology-related fields. As a not-for-profit publisher, submissions to our portfolio are an investment in our community, supporting our work to provide events, grants, and professional development for microbiologists at all career stages.
