Andrew Edwards at Imperial College London, UK, takes us behind the scenes of their latest publication with researchers at the University of Ghana, titled 'Polymyxin heteroresistance in Klebsiella oxytoca', published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology.

Orlando Ross at the Medical Research Council’s Centre for Medical Mycology, UK, takes us behind the scenes of their latest publication 'Cryptococcus neoformans responds to presence of mycobacterium by diversifying its morphologies and remodelling its capsular material', published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology.

Let’s dive straight into the exciting discoveries published this month in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, including the rarely seen inclusion of three new fungi!

Methanobacterium nebraskense is also the first published archaeal microbe isolated from the Eastern Saline Wetlands, a nationally unique and endangered ecosystem located in and around Lincoln created by the upwelling of saline groundwater.

With our flagship Annual Conference fast approaching this month, we‘ve of course still found the time to spotlight the incredible research published in our portfolio – here are our highlights from the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

In this month's Microbe Talk, Charlotte Holtum (Head of Engagement & Storytelling) welcomes guests Dr Alicia Demirjian (UK Health Security Agency and Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust) and Dr Yoann Personne (bioMérieux), to explore an underdiscussed corner of the antimicrobial resistance conversation: its management with sepsis. They discuss what underpins the real-world relationship of AMR and sepsis, improving antibiotic stewardship in hospitals, and addressing these issues sooner rather than later.

Scientists have proven that a wildflower steeped in folklore for its medicinal powers has genuine healing qualities – and the potential to help combat antibiotic resistance.

Boris Parra at the Universidad de Las Américas (UDLA) and Universidad de Concepción (UDEC), Chile, takes us behind the scenes of their latest publication 'Isolation, characterization and genomic analysis of a novel lytic bacteriophage EcoPhCCP1, capable of infecting multiple strains of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli recovered from urinary tract infections', published in the Journal of General Virology.

Orthohantaviruses, such as the Puumala virus, is widespread in Europe, causing flu-like illnesses and severe kidney damage in those infected. It is increasingly considered a zoonotic threat. Researchers from the Medical Faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen and the University Hospital Essen, Germany, have gained new insights into how these viruses alter the internal structure of their host cells. Their findings were published on 12 February, in the Journal of General Virology.

There’s a whole new slate of microbial discoveries to share with you all this month from the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology!

Cryptococcus neoformans, a pathogen fungi responsible for 112,000 deaths in 2020, is increasingly found in patients alongside the bacterial pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In the paper, published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, researchers identify for the first time that interaction between the two microorganisms contributes towards worsened disease outcomes in those co-infected.
