Lockdown science project: help Holly identify these moulds

Posted on May 28, 2020   by Laura Cox

Earlier this month, we were contacted about a very important request: help with nine-year-old (nearly 10!) Holly's lockdown science project. Holly 'accidentally' grew some pretty amazing fungi in a home petri dish and has asked our members for help in identifying them.

After Holly grew up her fungi, she set about using the scientific method to try and figure out what these colonies might be.

Using some of the Microbiology Society's resources on colony morphology, Holly created a slideshow explaining what she thinks she might have found:

Now Holly needs your help – if you recognise any of these fungi, let us know on social media where we will be sharing images of the four colonies that Holly has found, or send an e-mail to [email protected] to let us know what you think. Keep an eye out for another blog in the next few weeks where we will be sharing the answers!
