Overview

The Microbiology Society is delighted to be delivering the next meeting on Candida and Candidiasis as part of its events programme in 2025.

Candida and Candidiasis 2025 will bring together scientists studying diverse aspects of Candida biology, as well as interactions between these fungal species and their mammalian hosts and other microbial community members. Candida species are commonly found colonizing multiple niches in the human body but are also responsible for a wide variety of important diseases that range from oral and vaginal candidiasis to life-threatening systemic infections. This meeting covers a broad spectrum of subjects that relate to Candida epidemiology, physiology, drug resistance, colonisation, infection, immune responses, the host roles in colonization and disease progression, and therapeutics.  We will also highlight the new trends in Candida infections including the rapid emergence of the multi-drug resistant strains and species including Candida auris. The goals of the meeting are to present the latest advances in the field, to spotlight the achievements of early career scientists, to ensure participation and promotion of diverse scientists, to foster synergistic and interdisciplinary interactions and to provide a forum for community-wide discussions and collaborations.

Organising committee:

  • Chair: Deborah Hogan (Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, USA)
  • Co-Chair: Todd Reynolds (University of Tennessee at Knoxville, USA)
  • Chair of Programme Committee: Ilse Jacobsen (Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, Germany)
  • Co-Chair of Programme Committee: Anna Selmecki (University of Minnesota Medical School)

Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Candida-host interactions and immune responses
  • Mechanisms and regulation of Candida biology (morphogenesis, mating and more)
  • Microbial interactions (microbiome, biofilms, co-infections, chemical signaling)
  • Clinical data and issues relating to the diagnosis, prevention and management of candidiasis
  • Epidemiology and trends
  • Candida heterogeneity and genome dynamics
  • Drug discovery, activity, and resistance
  • Novel tools and techniques for the study of Candida and candidiasis

COVID-19 Mitigation statement for Microbiology Society events

As part of the preparations for Microbiology Society events, the Microbiology Society Council has further discussed the implementation of SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 mitigations and has agreed the following:

Personal responsibility:

Attendance at any Microbiology Society event is a personal choice, and Council expects delegates to take personal responsibility for their actions to minimise the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

Ventilation:

The Microbiology Society will continue to work with venues to seek assurance that these are adequately ventilated.

Vaccination and pre-event testing:

We strongly urge all delegates to ensure they are as fully vaccinated as practicable, which we recognise will depend on their age and home country, and to test before travelling to any of our events. Delegates should not attend if they test positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, should they wish to, delegates should feel comfortable wearing a mask in any of our venues.

Mask usage and lateral flow tests:

A limited number of masks (FFP3) and lateral flow tests will be available upon request at all Microbiology Society events should any delegates wish to use them. However, these will not be routinely supplied.

The Microbiology Society Council will continue to monitor the situation and update these mitigations as required.
