Eligibility

Postgraduate Student Members resident in the UK or Ireland who are presenting work.

Full Concessionary Members resident in the UK or Ireland may apply; if working in a research capacity e.g. a postdoctoral researcher, an abstract should be presented at the Conference/Event.

Full Concessionary and Postgraduate Members who are presenting but are not resident in the UK or Ireland should apply to the Travel Grant scheme for support.

What is covered by the grant?

Awards are made on the basis that funds are sought from as many avenues as are available to the applicants and therefore are intended as a contribution to the costs of attendance.

Set awards will be made, dependent on distance from conference venue, and membership category.

Annual Conference (in-person meeting)

Members living less than one hour from the Conference venue by public transport will receive up to £240 (Postgraduate Student Members) or £250 (Full Concessionary Members).

Members living more than one hour from the Conference venue by public transport will receive up to £360 (Postgraduate Student Members) or £380 (Full Concessionary Members).

Applicants who require support for childcare or caring costs may also apply for an additional sum of up to £500. If ineligible for Society Conference Grant support (i.e. if a Full Member or a member who is not presenting), members may apply separately for a caring cost grant through Mi Society.

Other Focused Meetings (in-person meetings)

Eligible members may apply for up to £400 to support their attendance at the Europic 2022 Focused Meeting and up to £250 to support their attendance at all other 2022 Focused Meetings. Applicants who require support for childcare or caring costs may also apply for an additional sum of up to £500. Event cancellations and refunds

If the event is cancelled by the Society:
We are aware of ongoing uncertainty around event attendance as the pandemic continues. While we plan for 2022 events to take place in-person (unless specified otherwise), should the Council of the Microbiology Society be forced to announce the cancellation of an event, conference attendance grant awardees will be expected to return their stated award sum to the Society in full.

The Grants Office may consider exceptions to refunds on a case-by-case basis and subject to the provision of appropriate evidence.

Awardees may choose to donate their stated award sum to the Unlocking Potential Fund, to support early and mid-career members to progress and reach their full career potential.

Details on how to complete a grant refund will be made available online in due course. For any questions, please contact [email protected].

If members are unable to attend their event although it is still going ahead:
We are aware of ongoing uncertainty around event attendance as the pandemic continues. While we plan for 2022 events to take place in-person (unless specified otherwise), we appreciate that some members may choose not to attend. If members cancel their attendance at any stage in the lead up to the event, conference attendance grant awardees will be expected to return their stated award sum to the Society in full.

Awardees may choose to donate their stated award sum to the Unlocking Potential Fund, to support early and mid-career members to progress and reach their full career potential.
