Mark is Professor of Virology at the University of Leeds and has held a number of positions at the Microbiology Society, including as General Secretary from 2020 to 2022. He was  previously Editor-in-Chief of JGV and has also served as Chair of the Society’s Scientific Conferences Panel and Chair of Virus Division.

On becoming the interim Editor-in-Chief, Mark said, “I am very pleased to act as interim Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of General Virology.  I hope that my previous experience and knowledge of the journal will ensure a smooth transition to the next Editor-in-Chief so that we can continue to publish impactful virological research and support the Society.  In these financially uncertain times, the contribution of our journals to the Microbiology Society has never been more important. Publications in our journals provide direct benefits to the community by funding activities such as our Annual Conference and other events, grants and professional development opportunities.”

On the appointment, Dr Peter Cotgreave, Chief Executive of the Microbiology Society, said, “We are delighted Mark has accepted the role of interim Editor-in-Chief of JGV. This comes at a time when, as a not-for-profit publisher, we are working hard to drive submissions across our portfolio of popular titles. Mark brings a wealth of experience and expertise, and I know he will ensure the journal continues to thrive.”

The Journal of General Virology is at the forefront of virology research and home to the invaluable ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profiles.

The Microbiology Society is a membership charity and not-for-profit publisher – everything we offer our community happens thanks to the revenue generated by publishing.
