Society Conference Grants
Funds are available to eligible members to support their attendance at the Annual Conference or one other Society meeting per year.
Maximum award: Annual Conference: £250; Focused Meetings: £300

Applications for support to attend Annual Conference 2019 will open in January 2019. Please check the name of the grant you are applying for carefully and select the correct button on the left hand side after you log in to apply.
Delegates who are ineligible for Conference attendance support but whom are eligible for support for caring costs may apply separately for a caring cost grant by contacting the Grants Office.
Applicants may also use this grant scheme to apply for support for their caring needs.

Postgraduate Student Members resident in the UK or Ireland who are presenting work.
Full Concessionary Members resident in the UK or Ireland who are postdoctoral researchers presenting work.
Full Concessionary Members resident in the UK or Ireland who are working as technicians in microbiology laboratories who can give justification for how attendance will benefit their professional development.
Full Concessionary retired members resident in the UK or Ireland, whose membership has not lapsed since the date of their change of status from Full (or Ordinary) membership, and who can give justification for how their attendance will benefit early-career delegates (for example, through mentoring) at the event.
Full Concessionary and Postgraduate Members who are presenting but are not resident in the UK or Ireland should apply to the Travel Grant scheme for support.
Full, Full Concessionary and Postgraduate Student Members who wish to apply for childcare, caring or other similar costs. If ineligible for a Society Conference Grant, eligible members may apply separately for a caring cost grant by contacting the Grants Office.
Awards are made on the basis that funds are sought from as many avenues as are available to the applicants and therefore are intended as a contribution to the costs of attendance.
Set awards will be made, dependent on distance from conference venue, and membership category.
Members living less than one hour from the Conference venue by public transport will receive up to £125 (Postgraduate Student Members) or £145 (Full Concessionary Members).
Members living more than one hour from the Conference venue by public transport will receive up to £238 (Postgraduate Student Members) or £245 (Full Concessionary Members).
Applicants who require support for childcare or caring costs may also apply for an additional sum of up to £500. If ineligible for Society Conference Grant support (i.e. if a Full Member or a member who is not presenting), members may apply separately for a caring cost grant through Mi Society.
Eligible members may apply for up to £300 to support their attendance at a Society Focused Meeting. Applicants who require support for childcare or caring costs may also apply for an additional sum of up to £500. If ineligible for Society Conference Grant support (i.e. if a Full Member or a member who is not presenting), members may apply separately for a caring cost grant by contacting the Grants Office
Applications should be made online via Mi Society. All required supplementary material should be provided at the point of application. Full expected costs of attendance should be given in the appropriate part of the application.
Deadlines for applications for support to attend Society meetings:

Applications will be considered by the Society’s Professional Development team against the following criteria:
- Applicant fulfils the stated eligibility criteria;
- Applicant’s (excluding retired or technician applicants) abstract has been accepted by the meeting organisers;
- Retired applicants only: clearly justify how attending the event will benefit early career delegates;
- Attendance of the event is a clear and stated benefit to the applicants’ professional development;
- The supporting statement acknowledges the applicant’s career stage and the necessity of attendance for their career development.
Applicants should expect to receive notification of the outcome of their application within two weeks of the closing date.
Applicants will be notified of an awarded grant via email. The grant award will also be displayed on the Mi Society account under ‘Grant History’.
To claim a grant, successful applicants should log into Mi Society, and enter the award amount in the grant claim form. No receipts are required for Society Conference Grants.
Awarded funds will be paid to the applicant’s nominated account by bank transfer within one month of an award claim being made.
Grant recipients are responsible for their own conference registration, accommodation and travel bookings.
