House of Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry on the antimicrobial of bacteriophages

The Microbiology Society submitted a response to a call for evidence launched by the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee on the antimicrobial potential of bacteriophages. The inquiry seeks to establish the strengths and weaknesses of bacteriophage therapy and identify opportunities for the UK government to adapt and improve existing policies.

In our response, we provide scientific evidence, highlight existing barriers both to bacteriophage research and the use of bacteriophage therapy, and identify opportunities for the UK government to simplify the compassionate use of bacteriophages as a last resort treatment.

We note that our response reflects the views expressed by 17 individuals who responded to our call for expertise.
