General Secretary's Panels

For certain processes or awards within its responsibility, the Board of Trustees delegates authority to the General Secretary to convene panels to consider and bring recommendations back to the Board of Trustees for decision or ratification.

The General Secretary convenes panels for the following purposes:

  1. On an annual basis to consider recommendations for the best applicants to appointed positions on the governance structure. This is known as the Appointments Panel.
  2. On an annual basis to consider recommendations for the award of prizes. This is known as the Prize Award Panel.
  3. On an ad hoc basis to consider recommendations for a shortlist of Honorary Membership nominations. This is known as the Honorary Membership Review Panel.
  4. On an ad hoc basis to consider matters of professional standards. This is known as the Professional Standards Panel.

  • Appointments Panel

The Appointments Panel considers applications to all appointed positions across the governance structure. The Appointments Panel is convened in different configurations dependent on the unique expertise required to appoint to each governance body.

  • Honorary Membership Review Panel

Honorary Membership is offered to distinguished microbiologists who have made a significant contribution to the discipline of microbiology and/or the Society.

  • Professional Standards Panel

The Professional Standards Panel reviews cases where the Board of Trustees has reason to believe that the professional standards of its members or of a prize winner have been called into question.
