Annual Conference 2026: Announcing our Hot Topic

We are delighted to announce the Hot Topic presentation at Annual Conference 2026 will be ‘What AI can and can’t do for antibiotic discovery’, given by Assistant Professor Jon Stokes on 16 April 2026 at the ICC, Belfast, UK.

Headshot of Jon Stokes

Jon Stokes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University, Canada. His research focuses on the development and application of leading-edge machine learning techniques for novel drug discovery and design tasks, with an emphasis on antibiotics. Jon is also co-founder and CSO of Stoked Bio.

On the opportunity to present the Hot Topic at the Microbiology Society’s Annual Conference 2026, Jon said: “AI”, as just a term even, gets a lot of attention and stirs up a lot of emotion. Sometimes that attention is positive, and other times (maybe even most of the time?) not so much. I’m excited for this super cool opportunity to have an open and honest discussion about what AI can and can’t do to help us invent new antibiotics.”
