Annual Conference Online 2021 has begun – what to look forward to on day one

The event has been designed as a digital version of the Society’s flagship annual meeting whose symposia and activities are designed to achieve the same scientific and networking objectives.

President of the Microbiology Society, Professor Judith Armitage, will start the week off with a welcome address and introduction at 09:00 BST, followed by Martin Maiden’s (University of Oxford, UK) Marjory Stephenson Prize Lecture 2021: ‘The application of population genomics to meningococcal disease prevention’.

This afternoon, the 2021 Fleming Prize winner, Professor Britt Koskella (University of California, Berkeley, USA) will present her talk titled ‘The challenges and opportunities for understanding the factors shaping the plant microbiome’ at 17:30 BST.

Sessions taking place at the Conference today include:

  • Microbial physiology, metabolism and molecular biology, sponsored by the Microbiology Society’s journal, Microbiology
  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), sponsored by the Microbiology Society’s journal, Microbiology
  • SARS-CoV-2 and the COVID-19 pandemic: molecular virology and immunology, sponsored by the Microbiology Society’s Journal of General Virology
  • Careers in microbiology
  • Essential skills: entrepreneurship
  • Industry sponsored session: Qiagen: ‘Advantage of absolute quantification of digital PCR in wastewater monitoring’

Poster sessions

Most poster sessions will run at 18:30–19:30 BST throughout the week, but today, AMR part 2 will take place at 19:30–20:30 BST. Below is a full list of those taking place today:

  • AMR poster sessions (part 1: P001 - P048, part 2: P049 - P096)
  • Environmental and applied microbiology poster session
  • Microbial physiology, metabolism and molecular biology poster session

Social and networking sessions

Join us during the first break of the day 11:15–11:45 for a kick starter session which will comprise a series of easy-to-follow exercises that will leave you feeling both relaxed and energised, ready for the busy day ahead. Gentle movement, breath and meditation techniques will help increase your ability to focus and concentrate. No experience needed; you will take away simple tools you can use any time. You do not need to keep your camera on. This session will be delivered by Nick Stolerman who designs and delivers wellbeing sessions for corporate and event settings.
