Zoonotic diseases
05 November 2015 publication
Emerging zoonotic diseases, such as chikungunya, are not the only cause for concern; some zoonotic diseases, like rabies, have been circulating for centuries – both of these diseases are covered in this issue of Microbiology Today. Other articles cover the topics of hantaviruses spread by rodent vectors, the lesser known but common Campylobacter, and the Comment piece discusses the recent Ebola pandemic.

Schoolzone: Teaching zoonoses in schools
05 November 2015Zoonoses are a fascinating topic for school students; the spread of diseases that can pass between animals and humans holds a gruesome appeal. But how can we teach about zoonoses in schools in an engaging way, when, for obvious reasons, we cannot carry out wet laboratory experiments using any of these pathogens? In this article we explore student activities covering various aspects of the subject, including emerging zoonotic diseases, biosecurity and the spread of infection.
